Statement by the Leader of the Official Opposition on Holocaust Remembrance Day

The Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“Today is a day to reflect upon the horror and crime that was the Holocaust.

We take a moment to remember all of the innocent men, women, and children, including six million Jews, who perished in Nazi death camps and ghettoes during the Second World War. We also honour all of the survivors whose courage and resilience has continued to inspire future generations.

Sadly, anti-Semitism, intolerance, and racism still exist in our world today, and are far from eliminated. In many parts of the world, people still face persecution and terror for who they are and for what they believe in.

It is our duty to listen and learn from history’s lessons. We need to be vigilant and stand up for our values, so that our world is safer for minorities and free of the intolerance of the past. Our world should have no room for hatred.

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, I encourage all Canadians to reflect upon one of the darkest periods of human history, so that we can all strive towards building a more dignified and tolerant future for our children.

The best way to truly honour the victims of the Holocaust is to never forget.”
