ACT NOW: Strong Canadian response to growing Iranian threats

On Friday, September 7th, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. John Baird, announced that in response to Iran’s growing violations of international law and continued pursuit of nuclear weapons, as well as the safety of our diplomats, Canada has closed its embassy in Iran and will be expelling all Iranian diplomats from Canada within five days. Additionally, it is listing Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism under the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act.

This bold step sends a clear signal to the Iranian regime that their ongoing violent abuses of human rights domestically, support for Assad’s brutal campaign in Syria, orchestration of terrorist attacks worldwide and relentless pursuit of nuclear weapons capability will not be tolerated and that the international community will use every available means to prevent its continuation. The Government of Canada continues to take important steps to ensure that every diplomatic and legal measure at its disposal is employed to confront this dangerous regime. Listing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization is a key next step in this effort.
