The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement expressing Canada ’s serious concerns with the dedication of a street in Ramallah after an infamous terrorist:
“The Government of Canada stands firmly opposed to terrorism and strongly denounces any efforts to glorify terrorists and their deplorable actions. The dedication of a Ramallah street after notorious Hamas terrorist Yihyeh Ayyash, the architect of numerous terrorist attacks, is deeply troubling.
“Honouring terrorists who have murdered innocent civilians is not constructive to efforts to advance the causes of peace in the region. Canada calls for the cessation of these inflammatory acts.
“ Canada has consistently held that the way forward for both parties must be through a negotiated settlement of this decades-old conflict, in accordance with the commitments they have each undertaken. These efforts must be done in good faith. We hope that the parties, with U.S. participation, can achieve progress that will lead to a resumption of direct negotiations in pursuit of a comprehensive peace agreement.”
