Over two millennia ago a group of Jewish faithful led by the Maccabees overcame and defeated their foreign oppressors, liberating Jerusalem and reclaiming the Holy Temple as their own. As they rededicated the Temple, a second miracle occurred: a small amount of oil that should have lasted one night instead burned for eight. Jewish communities around the world celebrate the tradition of Chanukah in commemoration of those miracles.
More than two thousand years later, the Jewish victory still resonates as a triumph of religious freedom over subjugation, and of tolerance over persecution.
May the light of the menorah continue to honour the indomitable spirit and enduring strength of the Jewish people. And let it serve as a guide to us all to rededicate ourselves to freedom and pluralism, and to act against injustice and tyranny wherever we see it.
To all those celebrating in Canada and around the world, from my family to yours, we wish you a very happy Chanukah—Chanukah Sameach!
Yours very truly,
The Honourable Rona Ambrose, P.C., M.P
Member of Parliament for Edmonton-Spruce Grove
