OTTAWA- Co-Chair of the All Party Interfaith Committee (APIF) MP Mark Adler, York Centre, applauds the establishment of the Office of Religious Freedom.
On Feb. 19th, 2013 Prime Minister Stephen Harper hosted an event in Vaughan to launch the Office of Religious Freedom and announce the new Ambassador, Dr. Andrew Bennet.
“Living in Canada, we are so lucky to have a government that promotes tolerance, understanding and cooperation, and that protects all religious minorities from discrimination in any form,” MP Adler said. “It gives me great pride that our government has made the promotion of religious rights abroad a foreign policy priority.”
“There is a crucial and historical link between respect for religious pluralism and the development of democracy itself. And that is why we shall continue to champion freedom of conscience and freedom of religion throughout the world,” Prime Minister Harper said at the event.
“And, today, as many centuries ago, democracy will not find – democracy cannot – find fertile ground in any society where notions of the freedom of personal conscience and faith are not permitted,” the Prime Minister stated.
MP Adler is looking forward to working with the Office of Religious Freedom.
The next All Party Interfaith Committee meeting will be held in Ottawa on March 6, 2013.
