Liberal Line: Conservative Sanctions against Iran are Inadequate

OTTAWA– Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Dominic Leblanc made the following statement today on the Conservative government’s announcement of additional sanctions against the Iranian regime:

“Once again, the Conservative government’s proposed sanctions against the Iranian regime simply do not go far enough. Canada must strengthen its efforts to encourage regime change – including sanctioning the major human rights violators – and the most comprehensive way to do so is to officially designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization – an action that has repeatedly been called for by Liberals.”

Liberal Human Rights critic Irwin Cotler continued:

“The IRGC is at the epicenter of the Iranian regime’s four-fold threat, involved in domestic repression and human rights abuses, state-sanctioned incitement to genocide, nuclear proliferation and support for state-sanctioned international terrorism. By failing to list the IRGC directly, this government’s sanctions against the Iranian regime will not promote the meaningful change so desperately needed for the Iranian people.”
