Liberal Member of Parliament and former Minister of Justice Irwin Cotler rose in the Canadian House of Commons to condemn the murderous terrorist assault on a Jewish school in Jerusalem. He said: “in speaking yesterday in the House of the danger of anti-Jewish terror – of the targeting of Jews because they are Jews – I did not know, that at that time in a tragic irony, a terrorist attack in Jerusalem was taking place.”Cotler also condemned Hamas’ obscene declaration “blessing the terrorist attack and calling for more, as thousands celebrated the killing in the streets.” He cited the words of the distinguished Mid-East scholar Professor Fouad Ajami, who wrote at the time of the Passover massacre – yet another anti-Jewish terrorist attack:

“The suicide bomber of the Passover massacre did not descend from the sky; he walked straight out of the culture of incitement let loose on the land, a menace hovering over Israel, a great Palestinian and Arab refusal to let that country be, to cede it a place among the nations, he partook of the culture all around him–the glee that greets those brutal deeds of terror, the cult that rises around the martyrs and their families.”

In closing, Cotler condemned the underlying culture of hate that underlined the attack: “this culture of hate must end. This incitement must stop. For it is this state-sanctioned hate and incitement that leads to Hamas missiles targeting Israeli civilians in Sderot and Ashkelon, and terrorist attacks in Jerusalem. We need a culture of peace, not a culture of hate.” Contact: (514) 283-0171
