Cotler: Listing of Quds a welcome step, but government lacks a comprehensive strategy

“Government has yet to list the IRGC as a whole, hold Iran accountable for its state-sanctioned incitement to genocide, or sanction the major human rights violators.”

OTTAWA- Co-Chair of the Inter-parliamentary Group for Human Rights in Iran and Liberal Justice and Human Rights Critic Irwin Cotler made the following statement today on the Conservative government’s decision to add Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ (IRGC) Quds Force to Canada’s list of terrorist entities:

“Government has yet to list the IRGC as a whole, hold Iran accountable for its state-sanctioned incitement to genocide, or sanction the major human rights violators.”

“While the Conservative government’s decision to add the Quds force is welcome, the Government is engaged in a piecemeal rather than a necessary and comprehensive strategy. First, it needs to add the whole of the IRGC – which is at the epicenter of the Iranian four-fold threat – as a terrorist entity. Second, it needs to undertake the mandated legal remedies to hold Iran to account for its state-sanctioned incitement to genocide. Let there be no mistake about it: Iran has already committed the crime of incitement to genocide, prohibited under the Genocide Convention. Canada, as a State Party, is obliged to hold Iran to account. Third, Iran is engaged in massive domestic repression, but the Government has yet to sanction the major Iranian human rights violators. The Liberal Party has called for this action to be taken for years now – we trust that the Government will act accordingly with all deliberate speed”.
