Day Calls for More Action on Iran

For Immediate Release October 26, 2005

Ottawa – Stockwell Day, Official Opposition Foreign Affairs Critic, pressed the Federal Government today to begin to take meaningful steps against the Islamic regime in Iran.

Day’s demands followed today’s announcement by the President of Iran that Israel must be wiped off the map, that Palestinian attacks should continue against Israel, and that "anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fires of Islamic fury".

Day pointed out that the Liberal policy of so called ‘constructive engagement’ failed in the case of the murder of Canadian photojournalist Zahra Kazemi and also failed in relation to Iran’s nuclear threat.

Mr. Day expressed disappointment that the Prime Minister only offered words of condemnation against Iran and is refusing to ask the United Nations to consider sanctions against the authoritarian regime in Tehran.

"Especially in light of today’s suicide murders of Israeli’s this lack of Canadian action is disturbing," said Day. "Canada must lead an initiative at the United Nations seeking sanctions against the Iranian regime."
