Liberal Statement on New US Sanctions Against Iran

RIMOUSKI and MONTREAL, QC— Liberal Foreign Affairs critic Dominic LeBlanc made the following statement today on the United States Senate’s approval of expanding sanctions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran’s oil sector:

“We welcome today’s announcement from the United States for tougher sanctions against the Iranian regime. It is clear that the Senate legislation goes far beyond what is included in Canadian sanctions when it comes to holding the IRGC accountable for its dangerous actions. Liberals have long been calling for the Conservative government to take stronger action against the IRGC. There is a significant gap between the Conservative government’s rhetoric and action when it comes to our sanctions on Iran. Liberals continue to call on the Canadian government to sanction the IRGC directly by listing them as a terrorist entity, something that other countries have done but the Conservatives refuse to do.”

Liberal Justice and Human Rights critic Irwin Cotler continued:

“Last week in Parliament, we had a lengthy debate about the human rights situation in Iran with all-party support. During the debate, we called upon the Conservatives – and I reaffirm that call today–to list the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity in Canadian law and to sanction the injustices inherent within the Iranian legal system that allow for state-sanctioned repressive tactics against Iran’s own people. Further, Canada must take an international leadership role in holding Iranian leadership to account for its state-sanctioned incitement of hate and genocide in standing violation of international law. We must continue to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and to let them know that they are not alone in their brave and just struggle for freedom.”
