Minister Kenney recognizes the start of Hanukkah celebrations

Ottawa, December 22, 2008 — The Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, issued the following statement on Hanukkah:

“Today marks the beginning of Hanukkah, a commemoration of the triumph of the Jewish people against oppression more than two thousand years ago. Also known as the ‘Festival of Lights’, the heart of this celebration is a nightly menorah lighting which culminates on the eighth night when all eight lights are kindled. It symbolizes the struggle of the Jewish people against adversity.

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Jewish community for their contributions to Canada. They have greatly enriched this country with their skills, knowledge, and traditions, and our society has benefited enormously.

I extend my best wishes to those celebrating Hanukkah, here in Canada and around the world. May today be the beginning of a happy and blessed Hanukkah.”
