The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, issued the following statement:
"It is with regret that I am resigning as the National Campaign Co-ordinator of the Joe Volpe Leadership Campaign.
Joe and I have differing views on the appropriate response to the situation in the Middle East.
I believe in Israel’s right to defend itself. The previous Liberal government had declared Hezbollah a terrorist organization. However, as Canadians, we must do everything to ensure that a cease-fire agreement is reached. Lebanon cannot be used as the hostage by Hezbollah.
We should work with international partners in the U.N. and Canada should assist, if asked, as peacekeepers. Canadians, through their Government, should be engaged in re-building the area’s infrastructure once hostilities have ceased.
I am unable to continue on the campaign due to these differences. I wish Joe and the Campaign Team good luck in the future. I look forward to working with them in the future to continue to re-build the Liberal Party of Canada."
