Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff made the following statement today:
“Today, Canadians join with our Israeli friends and with Jewish people around the world to mark Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s national independence day.
Out of the 1948 War of Independence was born the modern, diverse democracy that is the Israel of today. On Yom Ha’atzmaut, we celebrate the birth of a safe and secure homeland for the Jewish people, where they can inhabit the same land, practice the same religion, study the same sacred texts, speak the same language and bear the same name as 3,500 years before.
Since 1948, Canada has maintained an unbreakable bond of friendship with Israel. The flourishing bilateral relationship between our two countries has deeply enriched all aspects of our culture and contributed greatly to the vitality and diversity of our communities. On this 62nd anniversary, we renew our commitment to the security of the State of Israel and to a true and lasting peace for all peoples of the Middle East.
On behalf of the Liberal party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I would like to extend my best wishes to the Jewish community in Canada on Yom Ha’atzmaut.
