Liberal MP Borys Wrzesnewskyj issued the following statement today:
“I would like to clarify recent comments that have been attributed to me, by the media, regarding Citizenship and Immigration Minister Jason Kenney’s recent trip to Poland.
My comments were solely in reference to the timing of Minister Kenney’s trip to Poland during the current crisis in Haiti. When I spoke to the media, I was not previously aware that a visit to Auschwitz was on the Minister’s itinerary, and was only made aware of this fact during the interview. In light of this fact, I sincerely regret these comments. I would never trivialize a Minister’s visit to Auschwitz and especially on the 65th anniversary of its liberation. Had I been fully informed, I would not have made these comments.
My own visit to Auschwitz had a profound effect on my understanding of the Holocaust and the horrors of genocide. At no time would I suggest that Minister Kenney’s trip to Auschwitz should be trivialized in any way.
I stand by my statement that such a visit ‘should be compulsory for every elected official’ and urge every Member of Parliament to witness the horror of Auschwitz first-hand.”
