Statement by NDP Leader Jack Layton on Holocaust Memorial Day

“Today, all Canadians join with the Jewish community around the world in marking Yom HaShoah, or the Remembrance Day for the Holocaust. We pay respect to the six million Jewish men, women and children who perished in one of the worst acts of brutality and cruelty in our history.

“The New Democratic Party pays tribute to the victims of the Holocaust and continues to raise awareness in Canada on the systematic genocide of the Jewish people during WWII.

“In 2006, the NDP was honoured to support Bill C-459, a landmark piece of legislation co-sponsored by NDP MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North). It passed and ensures Canada will commemorate Yom HaShoah every year. And NDP MP Paul Dewar (Ottawa Centre) has been instrumental in a parliamentary group for the Prevention of Genocide.

“We remind the federal government to continue to invest in educational programs and community initiatives to create more attention and awareness on the Holocaust and other acts of genocide and inhumanity around the world. It is important for young Canadians to understand the atrocities committed against innocent people and that these acts of evil will never be tolerated.

“We have the power to prevent hate and fear and it is the responsibility of all Canadians to never let this happen again.

“Lest we forget.”
