Yom HaShoah is a time for all Canadians to reflect as today is Holocaust Memorial Day.
It is with tremendous sadness that the New Democratic Party pays respect to the six million Jewish people who died in the one of the most tragic genocides of our lifetime.
The Holocaust has profoundly changed our perception of what humanity is capable of. It is our duty as citizens of the world, to ensure that such devastation is never repeated.
Today isn’t only to remember the cruelty and evil of how people died, but to think about the courage and strength of those who survived. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer survivors are left to tell their stories so we must not let their memory fade.
Brought here by tragedy, Jewish Canadians have made our country stronger and more vibrant. Working hand-in-hand with the community, we need to remain vigilant against anti-Semitism and all forms of hate and discrimination. We must pursue the ideal of a multicultural Canada, founded on respect and compassion, celebrating difference and diversity.
Lest we forget.
