The following is a statement by Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak on the commencement of Chanukah.
“Every year, we celebrate Chanukah as an eight day festival of lights that recalls the triumph of the Jewish people against tyranny and oppression more than two thousand years ago.
“Within the sacred temple, the Maccabees recovered a golden candelabrum that had been a national tradition known as the menorah. They lit the lamps with the hope that what little oil remained would last until more arrived. Amazingly, the oil lasted eight days.
“Since those fateful days, Chanukah has come to symbolize freedom from oppression and devotion to faith, hope for the future and the roots of Jewish heritage that will never be forgotten.
“As you gather with your family each night to light the Chanukah candles, exchange gifts and share a festive meal, know that the sacrifices of your ancestors are remembered and the contributions of Jewish-Canadians to our communities are valued by us all.
“From our family to yours and to the Jewish Community around the world, we wish you a Happy Chanukah full of light, optimism and hope. Chag Chanukah Sameach.”
