Statement by Stephen Harper to mark Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement:
“Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, marks the end of the Ten Days of Awe, which fall between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
“On Tuesday, Yom Kippur begins with the Kol Nidrei service at sundown, which will usher in a 24-hour period of introspection, prayer, fasting and repentance. Jews across Canada and around the world will attend synagogue, atone for their sins, and will look ahead to the new year with a clean slate. The following sundown, Jewish families, friends and communities will gather to mark the conclusion of this period of solemn observance and break the fast together.
“I wish everyone observing Yom Kippur both in Canada and around the world an easy fast, and a G’mar Hatimah Tovah as they strive for personal peace that will help make the world a better place for all.”
