Statement by the Leader of the Official Opposition on Passover

The Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Rona Ambrose, issued the following statement to mark Passover:

“This evening, those of the Jewish faith will join friends and family as they gather to commemorate and celebrate the liberation of the Jewish people and their exodus from slavery in ancient Egypt.

The main custom of Passover is to share the traditional Seder meal, which includes symbolic rituals and foods. Most significant in this celebration includes the avoidance of chametz (leaven). This is symbolic of the Jewish people’s historic and swift departure from Egypt, which didn’t allow time for the bread to rise.

Passover is a celebration of freedom over oppression, resilience against tyranny, and the strength of unity. It offers all Canadians a moment to think of others around the world, who struggle for freedoms and rights.

Canada is very fortunate to vaunt a Jewish community that has played such a vital role in building our peaceful and prosperous pluralistic society.

On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, I would like to extend warm wishes to the Jewish community here at home and around the globe as they prepare to celebrate Passover.

Chag Pesach kasher v’sameach”
