Statement by the Leader of the Official Opposition on Yom HaShoah

The Leader of the Official Opposition and Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Rona Ambrose, issued the following statement on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“On this day, we honour the memory of the millions upon millions – of boys and girls, mothers and fathers, neighbours and loved ones– who were brutally and systematically murdered by the Nazi regime during the holocaust.

“Today, we join those here in Canada, Israel, and around the world in observing the Holocaust Remembrance Day. In remembrance we honour the memories of the six million Jewish victims and millions of others who perished in the darkness of the Shoah.

“Yom HaShoah is a solemn occasion to commemorate, as we reflect on the many lives lost, and the loss of great potential that would never be fulfilled, we also pay tribute to all those who resisted the atrocious Nazi acts and those who survived.

“The Holocaust was one of the darkest chapters in the history of humanity. In commemorating the Holocaust, we gather to remember the millions of victims and honour the courage of those righteous individuals who risked their own lives to save others. Their memories shall be eternal.

“All Canadians of different faiths and backgrounds can reflect on the terrors of the Shoah, remember the victims, and honour the survivors. We must always remind ourselves that our commemoration rejects this evil and in humanity.

“On this day, I encourage all to participate in the remembrance of the Holocaust, remember and honour the victims and the survivors and to make a sincere commitment to ‘never again’.”
