Today marks the third anniversary of the capture by Hamas of IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. Gilad was kidnapped on June 25, 2006 in a cross border raid from the Gaza Strip into Israel, and has been held hostage ever since.
CJPAC has worked with the Canadian Rabbinic Caucus and Canada-Israel Committee on a multi-faceted campaign to mobilize Canada’s Jewish community on Gilad’s behalf and ask the Canadian government to advocate for his return with the International Red Cross and other international bodies. In December 2008, more than 60 rabbis and synagogues across the country dedicated their sermons on Shabbat Parshat Vayetze (Dec. 6) to the plight of Gilad Shalit, kicking off a letter-writing campaign using CJPAC’s innovative and exclusive advocacy software. More than 240 letters raising the plight of Gilad Shalit have been sent to Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon and copied to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Affairs critics Hon. Bryon Wilfert, Paul Dewar and Paul Crête.
CJPAC will be talking about Gilad Shalit today on Twitter. Follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/cjpac.
