For far too long Israel has fought for its very existence. Israel did not seek these confrontations. It is important to note that the recent actions taken by Israel would not have occurred if UN resolution 1559 had been fully implemented and the terrorist groups, Hamas and Hezbollah, had not entered sovereign Israeli territory and killed and kidnapped Israeli soldiers.
Concerted international pressure must be brought to bear and action must be swift to stop the continued firing of rockets into Israel by Hezbollah from Lebanon and the attacks by Hamas from Gaza. The actions required to re-establish stability to the area must include mutually recognized and secure borders, territorial integrity and democratic governments independent of foreign control. In the short term, the return of the three Israeli hostages and the full implementation of UN Resolution 1559 is imperative in order to secure a cease fire and move forward to a lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
I would like to express my heartfelt sympathies and condolences to all innocent victims of the conflict and believe that Canada must maintain a strong leadership role in the Middle East and lend its full support in encouraging an immediate resolution to this tragic human crisis.
