Unequivocal support for Israel

[20 July, 2006]

Winnipeg – I state unequivocally that Israel has the right and duty to defend its people from terrorism.

I express my deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones as a result of the violence in the Middle East. It is imperative that the blame for all deaths occurring as a result of this conflict be placed squarely at the feet of the aggressors and instigators of the current conflict, the terrorist groups Hezbollah and Hamas and their partners in terror Syria and Iran.

The international community must recognize that the recent violence has begun because of the terrorist actions of Hezbollah and Hamas. Israel’s response to the abduction of its soldiers and the rocket attacks into its country, is one that is in line with how any democratic government would have responded had they been the victim of an act of war.

Canada and the rest of the international community must take the lead and exert pressure on Iran and Syria, to immediately cease their sponsoring of terror groups and international terrorism.

The onus is on Hezbollah and Hamas to defuse this situation. They must renounce their terrorist ways. Until that time, Israel is justified in defending itself.
