Various Views on Israel

Stephane Dion (Liberal, St.-Laurent-Cartierville)

Mr. Dion supports additional government resources devoted to securing Jewish institutions.

Mr. Dion supports an “adequate” but not necessarily a “public” inquiry into the use of UNWRA funds, but is reluctant to freeze assistance pending the results of such an inquiry, in order “to avoid disadvantaging the Palestinian population.”

The candidate supports Israel’s fundamental right to self-defence, and believes in a “democratic and peaceful solution” to the conflict.

The candidate is not in favour of adopting the language of “Disputed Territories” to replace the often used “Occupied Territories.” He feels that focusing on semantics would only “create more tension,” and not “resolve the issue.”

He is very much in support of community-based healthcare initiatives.
