Zed calls for restraint

July 17, 2006

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Saint John Member of Parliament Paul Zed is deeply concerned about the escalation in violence, instability and civilian casualties on all sides of the conflict in Lebanon and the Middle East.

"As a Canadian of Lebanese origin, I have heard many concerns about this escalating conflict in Lebanon, and I have heard from a number of Canadians of Lebanese origin, who have also expressed their concerns to me," said Mr. Zed. "I am saddened by the loss of life and the destruction."

Mr. Zed appreciates the efforts that Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay and Canadian officials are making to assist in the evacuation of Lebanese Canadians during this crisis.

"I know that this situation provides many challenges for the Government of Canada in terms of evacuating Canadians safely, and I know that they are doing all that they can to facilitate this process," said Mr. Zed. "I will continue to monitor the situation closely."

Mr. Zed is calling for restraint and appeals to all parties to engage in a peaceful dialogue to end the cycle of violence and to provide the security and stability that their populations desperately deserve.
