The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issued a statement on January 27, 2020, International Holocaust Remembrance Day:
Today marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the infamous Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, where nearly a quarter of the 6 million Jews killed in Holocaust were mass murdered. On this sombre day, people across the world remember the innocent victims of one of the greatest crimes in human history and mourn the loss of innocent Jews that were murdered along with so many others by the Nazi regime.
Today, let us all reflect on the courage and resilience of the Holocaust survivors, whose survival was built on and expressed through countless acts of solidarity, mutual assistance and spiritual resistance. We take this opportunity to also pay tribute to those whom we lost forever in this horrific tragedy.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day serves as a reminder of the banality of evil, the danger posed by indifference and ignorance, as well as the importance of combatting vicious antisemitism, racism, and hatred in all of its forms. This is especially important in the face of continued denial of the Holocaust and ongoing threats of violence, harassment, and intolerance against Jews across the world by ideologies that deny human rights and dignity. May we never forget these horrors and vow to prevent this from ever happening again.
On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I encourage all Canadians today to reflect on the events of the Shoah and always stand up to anti-Semitism; and to all racism, xenophobia and persecution.
We remember!
