Statement by the Interim Leader of the Conservative Party on Israel’s Independence Day

The Hon. Candice Bergen, Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and of the Official Opposition, on May 4, 2022, released the following statement on Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Ha’atzmaut:

“The state of Israel has always served as a symbol of hope and renewal. Tonight, as the people of Israel celebrate their Independence Day, Canada celebrates alongside them as a close friend and ally. I’m very proud of Canada’s long-standing support for Israel over the past 74 years.

“Since its establishment in 1948, the State of Israel has been under constant threat of violence. Many people still believe that Israel does not have a right to exist. It has been repeatedly singled out at the UN for unfair condemnation, and antisemitism continues to grow around the world.

“Despite these immense challenges, Israelis have persevered. Israel remains a free, democratic and welcoming country. It has met threats to its existence with optimism and determination.

“On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada, I extend my best wishes to Israelis and Canada’s Jewish community as they celebrate.

“Yom Ha’atzmaut Sameach!”
