The Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement on Passover:
“Tonight marks the beginning of one of the most important holidays on the Jewish calendar. Across Canada, families and communities are gathering to celebrate Passover and remind each other of God’s great deliverance.
For many Jewish people around the world, Passover tells a story that feels close to home: one of hatred, and of violence. But more importantly, it tells a story of rescue and of hope, reminding us it is in the darkest of times that the light shines brightest.
Passover is also a time to reflect on the lasting strength and spirit of the Jewish people, and to celebrate their resilience against tyranny throughout history.
For us in Canada, it is an opportunity to consider those around the world who continue to struggle against their oppressors for basic rights and freedoms.
On behalf of the Conservative Party of Canada, I wish my Jewish neighbours and friends as well as the entire Jewish community across this country a happy Passover! As you celebrate over good food and retell the ancient stories, may joy, hope, and blessing fill your homes.
Chag Semeach!”
