Statement by the Leader of the Official Opposition on Yom Ha’atzmaut

The Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement on Yom Ha’atzmaut:

“Today, many Jewish communities around the world will mark the beginning of Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Israel Independence day, when the Jewish state was born 70 years ago. Every year on the 5th of Iyar in the Hebrew calendar, Jews across the world gather with friends and family to commemorate and celebrate the foundation of the State of Israel.

During this joyous occasion, we come together to honour a small but mighty country and celebrate seventy years of success, strength, and growth.

Canada was one of the first countries to recognize and champion the state of Israel and we continue to honour our historic friendship, which is rooted in our common fundamental values of freedom and democracy.

As Israel faces constant threat to their existence, Canada’s Conservatives will always defend the right of the Jewish people to live in peace and freedom in their ancestral homeland. We will always stand up for Israel’s right to exist. Canada and our allies must combat efforts to delegitimize the world’s only Jewish state.

Yom Ha’Atzmaut Sameach!

Happy 70th Anniversary!“
