The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives, issues statement on Hanukkah:
“I would like to extend my warmest wishes to all Jewish Canadians and to our Jewish friends all around the world who begin the celebration of Hanukkah this evening. For the next eight nights, Jewish families across Canada will gather to light the menorah and tell the miracle of Hanukkah.
The eight-day Festival of Lights celebrates the triumph of the Maccabees over the pagan oppressors of Israel over two millennia ago and the subsequent rededication of the Jewish Temple at Jerusalem.
As the nights get darker and longer at this time each year, Jewish homes and communities light up in celebration of these miracles and others that have upheld the Jewish people and affirmed their faith over the centuries.
The story of Hanukkah is about the resilience of the Jewish people and their faith in God, which serves as a reminder that light conquers darkness, that faith can overcome fear, and just like the lights on the menorah, hope is constant. It is Rabbi Jonathan Sacks who once said, that the Jewish people have survived “…through expulsions, persecutions, and pogroms, even the Holocaust itself, because they never gave up the faith that one day they would be free to live as Jews without fear.”
Canada is blessed to be home to a vibrant and engaged Jewish community that has enriched our society. This event provides the opportunity for Canadians of all backgrounds to learn about the profound history of the Jewish people and their fortitude in the face of adversity.
On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives and from my family to yours, I wish all celebrating tonight a very Happy Hanukkah! May this holiday season bring everyone peace, joy and goodwill.
Chag Hanukkah Sameach!”
