Statement by the Leader of the NDP on Holocaust Remembrance Day

The Leader of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh, issued the following statement on Holocaust Remembrance Day:

“Today, we reflect on the genocide that was carried out during the Second World War and remember the six million Jewish people who died in this terrible tragedy.

We also remember the 5 million Slavs, 3 million ethnic Poles, 200,000 Romani people, 250,000 disabled people and the 9,000 gay men who were also murdered for simply being who they are.

While the horrors suffered by these innocent people will forever haunt us, we must remember the triumph of the human spirit – in the determination of those who survived and the courage of those who provided refuge at great risk to their personal safety.

Genocide and other mass atrocities against humanity continue to jeopardize efforts at creating peace and justice in our world.

On this day, New Democrats stand in solidarity with human rights defenders around the world who face daily threats to their safety as they continue to defend human rights.

Today, New Democrats remember, and we make it our duty to extinguish intolerance, racism and hatred of any kind, wherever it is found.

Let’s ensure that the world never again knows the horrors of the Holocaust.

Lest we forget.”
