The Leader of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh, issued the following statement on Purim:
“Tonight at sundown, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate the beginning of Purim.
Purim is a celebration of the strength of the human spirit and the will to survive in the face of unspeakable oppression. It is a time to commemorate the escape of the Jewish people from persecution in the ancient Persian Empire.
Purim is also a joyous occasion bringing families and friends together to share meals, make noise, and show compassion and charity to those who are less fortunate.
As we read the Megillah, and reflect on the bravery of Queen Esther and her uncle Mordecai, we are reminded of the triumph of hope, love, and courage over hate.
On this day, I invite everyone to reflect on the story of Purim, honour the contributions of Jewish Canadians to Canada, celebrate the diversity and resilience of our communities, and commit to building a world free from anti-Semitism, discrimination, and hatred in all its forms.
On behalf of Canada’s New Democrats, I wish all those celebrating a joyful Purim!
Chag Purim Sameach!”
