The Leader of the Official Opposition, Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement to mark Rosh Hashanah:
“This evening, Jewish people in Canada and around the world will gather to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year and the High Holidays.
“At sundown this evening, friends and families will gather to welcome the new Jewish year, 5778. This is a time known for retrospection, observance and prayer for a good year.. It also marks the beginning of the Asarat Yemei Teshuva, or the ‘Ten Days of Repentance’.
“During this time, Jewish communities will take part in holiday traditions. Many people will gather for a festive meal, which will include round challah, apples and honey, as the new year is ushered by the sounds of the shofar.
“During the high holy days, I encourage all Canadians to recognize the many significant contributions of the Jewish community in shaping a pluralistic and prosperous Canada.
“On behalf of the Official Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada, I want to wish everyone celebrating a joyous and sweet Rosh Hashanah and I hope the New Year brings you peace and prosperity.
“Shana tova u’metuka.”
