Statement by the Leader of the Official Opposition on Sukkot

The Leader of the Official Opposition and Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Andrew Scheer, issued the following statement on Sukkot:

“This evening, under the glowing stars, Jewish families in Canada, Israel, and around the world will gather in their sukkahs to begin celebrating the eight-day festival of Sukkot.

Sukkot, the Season of our Rejoicing, is one of the most joyous occasions on the Jewish calendar. The festival commemorates the forty-year period during which the ancient Israelites wandered in the Sinai desert, while living in temporary dwellings.

Today, this holiday is observed through special prayers, the building of temporary shelters referred to as sukkahs, celebratory meals, and daily blessings over the lulav and etrog.

Just like the Four Species, bound together, are integral to the meaning of this holiday, we find inspiration in how so many communities, bound together by our shared values, make up our strong and free country.

On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, I wish all Jewish Canadians celebrating Sukkot a Chag Sameach!”
