Rona Ambrose, Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“Yom HaShoah is a solemn occasion to commemorate the six million innocent Jewish men, women and children who were systematically and ruthlessly murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
“Today, Canadians of all backgrounds reflect on the horrors of the Shoah, remember the victims, honour the survivors, and recognize the righteous individuals who risked their lives to save others.
“The Holocaust was one of the darkest chapters in the history of humanity. We must never forget the lessons it taught us, and on this occasion we must re-dedicate ourselves to the fight against the prejudice and hatred that led to such cruel barbarity and inhumanity.
“We have always been proud to support Holocaust remembrance and education both in Canada and around the world. As a Government, we took a leading role in the fight against the scourge of anti-Semitism, including against efforts to delegitimize the State of Israel.
“On this day, I encourage all Canadians to participate in the remembrance of the Holocaust, to honour the victims and the survivors, and to make a sincere commitment to ‘never again’.”
